Hosting Infrastructure - Reliability Comes Standard

Mercury New Media’s partnership with Rackspace enables us to provide highly reliable enterprise-class hosting services while cost-effectively hosting within a world-class technical infrastructure.

Considered a leader in the field of web hosting and data center operations, Rackspace brings a great deal to the web-hosting table. Rackspace data centers are engineered to the highest levels of reliability, with extensive systems to address security and network redundancy. Reliability is guaranteed via redundancy in key systems such as network, electrical and HVAC.

Telecommunications Reliability

  • Only fully redundant, enterprise-class routing equipment is used in Rackspace data centers.
  • All routing equipment is housed in a secured core routing room and fed by its own redundant power supply.
  • Fiber carriers can only enter Rackspace data centers at disparate points to guard against service failure. Rackspace’s data centers utilize five concurrent Internet backbone connections from the following service providers:
    • Qwest® (OC-12 fiber optic cable)
    • Time Warner® (Gigabit Ethernet)
    • AT&T® (OC-12 fiber optic cable)
    • Sprint® (OC-12 fiber optic cable)
    • UUNet® (OC-12 fiber optic cable)

Physical Security

  • Keycard protocols, biometric scanning protocols and round-the-clock interior and exterior surveillance monitor access.
  • Only authorized data center personnel are granted access credentials to Rackspace data centers. No one else can enter the production area of the datacenter without prior clearance and an appropriate escort.
  • Every data center employee undergoes multiple and thorough background security checks before they're hired.

Precision Environment

  • Rackspace’s HVAC (Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning) system is N+1 redundant, ensuring a duplicate system immediately comes online should there be an HVAC system failure.
  • Every 90 seconds, all the air in the data center is circulated and filtered to remove dust and contaminants.
  • Advanced fire suppression systems are designed to stop fires from spreading in the unlikely event one should occur.
  • All cables are securely tied down with cable racks suspended from ceilings, providing dual routes for all cables.

Reliable and Conditioned Power

  • Should a total utility power outage ever occur, Rackspace data center power systems are designed to run uninterrupted, with every server receiving conditioned UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) power.
  • Rackspace’s UPS power subsystem is N+1 redundant, with instantaneous failover if the primary UPS fails.
  • If an extended utility power outage occurs, routinely tested, on-site diesel generators can run indefinitely.
